Former world No. 1 and 2010 champion Victoria Azarenka withdrew from next
week's Bank of the West Classic at Stanford with a viral illness, tournament
officials announced today.
Azarenka, a Belarus native who will turn 28 on Monday, gave birth to her first
child in December and return to the circuit in June.
The Bank of the West still has another former world No. 1, Maria Sharapova, as
well as two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, reigning Wimbledon titlist
Garbine Muguruza and 2010 French Open winner Francesca Schiavone, 37.
Americans entered in the tournament, Monday through Aug. 6 at the Taube Family
Tennis Center, include No. 16 Madison Keys, No. 23 CoCo Vandeweghe, local
favorite CiCi Bellis and reigning Wimbledon junior champion Claire Liu.
Bellis, 18, is the youngest player in the top 50 at No. 43.
